๐Ÿ“… Stardew Valley โ€” Year 2+ Advanced Guide

Data version: Stardew Valley 1.6.15 | Covers post-Community Center progression, Ginger Island, Perfection, and endgame strategies

You made it through Year 1. The Community Center is done (or you went the Joja route โ€” no judgment), your farm is producing, you've got a coop and a barn, and you've kissed at least one villager. So what now? Year 2 is where Stardew Valley opens up in a big way. This guide covers everything you need to know.

๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations โ€” You Finished Year 1. Now What?

Year 1 is the tutorial. Year 2 is where the real game starts. Here's what changes:

Aspect Year 1 Year 2+
Grandpa's Evaluation Not available Day 1 of Year 3 โ€” affects everything
Ginger Island Unlocked after CC Main content zone
Crops Basic seasonal rotation Ancient Fruit, Starfruit, year-round
Money 5,000โ€“50,000g season 100,000g+/day is normal
Skills Lv 5โ€“8 typical Lv 10 Mastery levels
Relationships 2โ€“4 hearts with most 10+ hearts, marriage, kids

Your Year 2 Goals (in order)

1. Grandpa's Preparation โ€” Get ready for the Day 1 Year 3 evaluation
2. Ginger Island Access โ€” Boat is repaired, go yesterday
3. Farm Layout Overhaul โ€” Sprinklers + Junimo Huts for automation
4. Endgame Money Machine โ€” Ancient Fruit Wine or Truffle Oil
5. Perfection Progress โ€” Start tracking the 7 categories
6. Mastery Levels โ€” Unlock the new 1.6 endgame skill system

Tip: Don't feel pressured to rush. Stardew Valley has no time limit (despite Grandpa's deadline). Year 2 is meant to be enjoyed at your pace. That said, planning for Grandpa's evaluation early saves stress later.

๐ŸŒฟ Community Center Completion โ€” Now What?

Whether you completed the bundles or bought Joja membership, the reward is the same: Ginger Island access and the Movie Theater.

Community Center Rewards

Unlock Effect How to Access
Ginger Island Boat Travel to tropical endgame zone Talk to Willy at the beach
Movie Theater New social activity + relationship boost Enter abandoned JojaMart
Greenhouse Year-round farming (already from CC) Your farm
Bus Repair Desert access for Starfruit/upgrades Already from CC
Minecarts Fast travel across map Already from CC
Glittering Boulder Remove by completing Fishing Bundle Mountain Lake

Post-CC Priority List

  1. Repair Willy's boat (requires 200 hardwood, 5 iridium bars, 5 battery packs)
  2. Set up Greenhouse for Ancient Fruit โ€” Turn those ancient seeds into a full greenhouse
  3. Unlock Ginger Island โ€” This is your main Year 2 playground
  4. Visit the Movie Theater โ€” Great for boosting hard-to-please NPC hearts
  5. Upgrade your house โ€” Kitchen for cooking, cellar for casks

Tip: If you picked the Artisan profession at Farming Lv 10, your Greenhouse Ancient Fruit wine sells for 2,310g per bottle. A full greenhouse (120 tiles) produces 120 Ancient Fruit every 7 days, which turns into 120 Ancient Fruit Wine = 277,200g/week with Artisan.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Ginger Island Focus

Ginger Island is the single biggest content drop in the game. Year 2 is when you should dig into it properly.

What to Do on Ginger Island (Year 2)

Priority Task Why
1 Plant Ancient Fruit on Island Farm Year-round growing, never replant
2 Build Island Keg Shed Process fruit on-island
3 Find Golden Walnuts Unlock all island areas (130 total)
4 Clear Volcano Dungeon Forge upgrades + Qi Gems
5 Qi Challenges Endgame rewards + perfection items

Island Farm Layout Strategy

The Island Farm has 788 arable tiles. A proper layout:

Central area: Ancient Fruit ร— 120 (with Deluxe Retaining Soil)
Left section: Hops ร— 80 + Kegs ร— 40
Right section: Starfruit ร— 60 (hyper speed-gro)
Pathways: Stone paths + Torches (prevent debris spawn)
Storage: 1 Shed with 100+ Kegs

Deluxe Retaining Soil is the game-changer โ€” it replaces sprinklers on Ginger Island so you don't have to worry about watering. Craft it once, plant Ancient Fruit, and harvest forever.

Tip: The 1.6 update added Fiber Seeds (craftable from mixed seeds + sap). Plant these in off-season tiles on the Island Farm to prevent debris from spawning. They grow in 7 days and you can just leave them.

๐Ÿ‘ด Grandpa's Evaluation โ€” How to Get 4 Candles

On Day 1 of Year 3, Grandpa's ghost visits and evaluates your progress. You get 1โ€“4 candles lit on his shrine.

Evaluation Criteria

Points Requirement Notes
2 100,000g total earnings This is cumulative, not current cash
1 30+ skill levels (total across all 5 skills) Each skill maxes at 10, so you need total 30+
1 Unlocked Community Center or Joja Warehouse Both count
1 8+ hearts with 5+ villagers Easy if you gift regularly
1 5+ hearts with your pet Pet them daily
1 5+ skill masteries Any combination
1 Own a Rusty Key Earned from donating 60+ museum items
1 Completed 30+ museum donations
1 Caught 25+ fish

4-Candle Guarantee Strategy

To guarantee 4 candles with no stress:

1. Make 100,000g (easy โ€” just sell crops all Year 2)
2. Get all 5 skills to level 6+ (passive play, just do activities)
3. Befriend 5 villagers (gift on birthdays + loved gifts)
4. Pet your dog/cat every single day
5. Complete the Community Center
6. Donate at least 30 items to the museum

Tip: You can get re-evaluated at any time by placing a Diamond in Grandpa's Shrine. So if you miss the 4 candles on Day 1, just fix whatever you missed and try again. The shrine is behind your house.

4-Candle Reward

Candle Count Reward
1 None (try again)
2 Statue of Grandpa (produces iridium ore daily)
3 Statue of Grandpa (yields more iridium)
4 Statue of Perfection โ€” produces 2โ€“8 Iridium Ore EVERY DAY

The Statue of Perfection is the best reward in the game by far. It gives you a steady iridium supply without ever touching the Skull Cavern again. That iridium funds your Sprinkler upgrades, tool upgrades, and endgame gear.

๐Ÿ† Perfection Tracker

The Perfection Tracker was added in 1.5 and expanded in 1.6. It tracks your progress toward 100% completion.

How to Check

Visit Qi's Walnut Room on Ginger Island (requires 100 Golden Walnuts). The tracker shows:

Category Requirement Notes
Shipping Ship 1 of every item (full list) 1.6 added new items
Cooking Cook every recipe 1.6 added new recipes
Crafting Craft every recipe 1.6 added new recipes
Fishing Catch every fish Includes Legendary Fish
Artifacts Donate all artifacts to museum 1.6 artifact list updated
Minerals Donate all minerals to museum
Stardrops Collect all 7 stardrops
Golden Walnuts 130 total
Achievements Complete every achievement 1.6 added new ones
Upgrades Max house, all tools iridium

Tip: The Perfection Tracker doesn't require 100% of everything โ€” some items are optional. Qi's Walnut Room shows exact counts for each category. Perfection is mid-to-late Year 2 minimum, usually Year 3+.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Endgame Money Strategies

Strategy 1: Ancient Fruit Wine (Best Overall)

Setup Cost Weekly Profit
Greenhouse (120 tiles) + Artisan Ancient Seeds from seed maker 277,200g/week
Island (120 tiles) + Artisan Ancient Seeds from seed maker 277,200g/week
Combined (Greenhouse + Island) ~50 Ancient Seeds to start 554,400g/week

Setup time: Takes 2โ€“3 seasons to scale from 1 Ancient Seed to full production. Use Seed Makers on every harvest until you reach capacity.

Strategy 2: Truffle Oil (Passive, Less Setup)

Setup Cost Daily Profit
12 Pigs + Gatherer/Artisan 19,200g 8,700g/day
Barn Deluxe + Auto-Grabber 25,000g Fully passive
Year-round with Ginger Island Pig barn on island Same rate year-round

Setup time: 2 weeks to buy pigs, 2 weeks for them to mature.

Strategy 3: Starfruit Wine (Highest Raw Profit)

Setup Cost Notes
Greenhouse Starfruit 400g/seed Replant every 13 days
Island Starfruit 400g/seed Use Hyper Speed-Gro
Wine price (Artisan) 3,150g/bottle Highest per-bottle value

Downside: Costly seeds (400g each) and must replant. Best combined with Seed Maker to reduce seed costs.

Strategy 4: Fairy Rose Honey (New 1.6)

Setup Setup Cost Daily Profit
1 Bee House + Fairy Rose 2,500g + 400g seeds 952g/hive
20 Bee Houses on Island 50,000g 19,040g/day

1.6 change: Fairy Rose Honey now sells for 952g base. With Artisan profession, that's 1,190g per honey. A field of 100 Bee Houses surrounded by Fairy Roses makes 119,000g every 4 days with almost zero daily work.

Tip: The best endgame setup combines all strategies: Greenhouse Ancient Fruit Wine (steady), Island Starfruit Wine (peak profit), and a Deluxe Barn of Pigs on Ginger Island (passive daily income). You'll clear 1 million gold per season without breaking a sweat.

๐ŸŒŸ Mastery Levels (1.6 Feature)

Version 1.6 added Mastery โ€” when you hit Lv 10 in all 5 skills, you start earning Mastery Points. Each Mastery Level unlocks powerful new abilities.

Mastery Unlock Effect
Farming Statue of Blessings Daily random blessing
Mining Statue of Dwarven Kings Daily ore/geode
Foraging Mystic Seeds Grow mystic tree
Fishing Skill Books Unlock special tackles
Combat Trinket Forge Craft trinkets
1. Farming โ†’ Statue of Blessings gives daily random buffs (best QoL)
2. Combat โ†’ Trinket Forge (trinkets are 1.6 endgame gear)
3. Mining โ†’ Free geodes and ore daily
4. Fishing โ†’ Skill books for XP bonuses
5. Foraging โ†’ Mystic seeds are nice but lowest priority

Trinkets are the big 1.6 endgame addition. Gear items like the Fairy Box (auto-heal), Magic Quiver (ranged attack), or Parrot Egg (pet parrot). These go in your trinket slot and provide permanent bonuses.
