๐Ÿท Stardew Valley โ€” Wine & Brewing Guide

Data version: Stardew Valley 1.6.15 | Covers Kegs, Preserves Jars, Dehydrators (1.6), and maximizing artisan profit

Artisan goods are the backbone of any serious Stardew Valley fortune. A single crop turned into wine can multiply its value by 3ร— โ€” or more with the Artisan profession. This guide covers every machine, crop comparison, and profit optimization strategy for 1.6.

๐Ÿญ Artisan Goods Overview

Machine Input Output Base Multiplier Processing Time
Keg Fruit โ†’ Wine Vegetable โ†’ Juice 3ร— 6โ€“7 days (fruit) / 4 days (veg)
Preserves Jar Fruit โ†’ Jam Vegetable โ†’ Pickles 2ร— 2โ€“3 days
Dehydrator (1.6) Fruit/Mushroom โ†’ Dried 1.5ร— 1 day
Cheese Press Milk โ†’ Cheese 1.2โ€“1.7ร— 3 hours
Mayonnaise Machine Egg โ†’ Mayo 3ร— 3 hours
Loom Wool โ†’ Cloth 1.4ร— 4 hours
Oil Maker Sunflower โ†’ Oil 2ร— 1 hour
Smoker (1.6) Fish โ†’ Smoked Fish 1.3ร— 2 hours

Artisan Profession

At Farming Level 10, you can choose the Artisan profession. This makes all artisan goods sell for 40% more. That means:

  • Ancient Fruit Wine: 1,650g โ†’ 2,310g
  • Starfruit Wine: 3,150g โ†’ 4,410g
  • Pale Ale: 300g โ†’ 420g

Tip: Artisan is the single best profession in the game for income. Tiller (Lv 10) gives +10% on raw crops โ€” better at lower levels, but Artisan dominates once you have Kegs.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Keg Mechanics

How Kegs Work

Property Value
Crafting Recipe Farming Lv 8
Materials 30 Wood + 1 Copper Bar + 1 Iron Bar + 1 Oak Resin
Input Any fruit (wine) or vegetable (juice)
Processing Time (Fruit) 6,000 min (โ‰ˆ6.25 days in-game)
Processing Time (Vegetable) 4,000 min (โ‰ˆ4.17 days)
Processing Time (Beer/Pale Ale) 1,710 min (โ‰ˆ1.78 days)
Processing Time (Honey) Not applicable (use Preserves Jar)
Quality Base quality only (Cask upgrades quality separately)

Keg Input Categories

Category Examples Time Base Output Price
Fruit โ†’ Wine Ancient Fruit, Starfruit, Melon 6.25 days 3ร— fruit value
Vegetable โ†’ Juice Wheat, Beet, Potato 4.17 days 2.25ร— veg value
Grain โ†’ Beer Wheat (Barley) 1.78 days 200g (always)
Hops โ†’ Pale Ale Hops 1.78 days 300g (always)
Honey โ†’ Mead Honey 2.5 days 200g (always)
Coffee Bean โ†’ Coffee Coffee Bean 0.75 days 150g (always)

Cask Aging

Once you have a cellar (house upgrade Lv 3), you can age wine in Casks to improve quality:

Quality Time Multiplier Sell Price (Ancient Fruit Wine + Artisan)
Base 0 days 1ร— 2,310g
Silver 14 days 1.25ร— 2,887g
Gold 28 days 1.5ร— 3,465g
Iridium 56 days 2ร— 4,620g

Tip: Only age Ancient Fruit Wine and Starfruit Wine in the cellar. Pale Ale and lower-value wines aren't worth the cask space (the profit-per-day drops significantly). Fill your cellar once with Starfruit Wine, let it hit Iridium quality over 56 days, and collect 4,620g per bottle.

๐Ÿ‡ Best Fruits for Wine

Sorted by Gold per Day to help you decide what to Keg.

Crop Base Price Wine Price Artisan Price Days Wine/Day (Artisan)
Starfruit 750g 3,150g 4,410g 6.25 706g/day
Ancient Fruit 550g 1,650g 2,310g 6.25 370g/day
Melon 250g 750g 1,050g 6.25 168g/day
Pumpkin (Juice) 320g 720g 1,008g 4.17 242g/day
Red Cabbage (Juice) 260g 585g 819g 4.17 196g/day
Cranberries 75g 225g 315g 6.25 50g/day
Blueberry 50g 150g 210g 6.25 34g/day
Strawberry 120g 360g 504g 6.25 81g/day
Hot Pepper 40g 120g 168g 6.25 27g/day

The Two Kings: Ancient Fruit vs Starfruit

Aspect Ancient Fruit Starfruit
Wine Price (Artisan) 2,310g 4,410g
Growth Time 28 days (then regrows 7 days) 13 days (no regrowth)
Cost per Harvest Free (regrows) 400g (replant)
Seed Source Artifact โ†’ Seed Maker Oasis shop (400g)
Kegs per Season ~4 harvests (Greenhouse/Island) ~2 harvests (Greenhouse/Island)
Year-round? Yes (Greenhouse/Island) Yes (Greenhouse/Island)
Cask Value Good (2,310โ†’4,620) Best (4,410โ†’8,820)

Verdict: Ancient Fruit wins for hands-off profit. Plant once in the Greenhouse, harvest every 7 days forever, never replant. Starfruit wins for maximum profit per keg but requires buying seeds and replanting. Use both: Ancient Fruit for bulk, Starfruit for cask aging.

Tip: A full Greenhouse of Ancient Fruit (120 tiles) with Artisan profession produces 120 Ancient Fruit Wine every 7 days = 277,200g/week. That's over 1 million gold per season with zero replanting.

๐Ÿซ™ Preserves Jar vs Keg Comparison

Aspect Preserves Jar Keg
Multiplier 2ร— (fruit = jam, veg = pickles) 3ร— (fruit = wine, veg = juice)
Processing Time 2โ€“3 days 6.25 days (wine)
Best For High-yield / low-value crops High-value / single-harvest crops
Pumpkin ~~2520g~~ actually 965g (2.62ร—) 720g as juice (2.25ร—)
Blueberry (3 berries) 630g (4.2ร— per tile) 420g (2.8ร— per tile)
Cranberries (2 berries) 525g (3.5ร— per tile) 315g (2.1ร— per tile)
Eggplant 525g as pickles 315g as juice

When to Use Preserves Jar Instead of Keg

Preserves Jar wins when:

  1. Multiple-harvest crops โ€” Blueberries (3 per bush) and Cranberries (2 per bush) get higher total value per day from the Jar because it processes faster and the multiplier applies per berry
  2. Short seasons โ€” In Spring, the Preserves Jar can process 3 batches in the time a Keg does 1, making it better for rapid turnover
  3. Filling gaps โ€” You have more crops than Kegs. Jar processes 2โ€“3ร— faster, so it catches overflow

Keg wins when:

  1. High-value single crops โ€” Starfruit, Ancient Fruit, Melon, Pumpkin
  2. You have Artisan profession โ€” The +40% applies equally, but 3ร— base beats 2ร— base
  3. You have Casks โ€” Only wine can be aged in the cellar

Quick Decision Table

Crop Type Better Machine Why
Ancient Fruit Keg 3ร— multiplier, cask aging
Starfruit Keg 3ร— multiplier, cask aging
Pumpkin Preserves Jar 2.62ร— vs 2.25ร— juice
Melon Keg 3ร— wine beats 2ร— jam
Blueberry Preserves Jar 4.2ร— per tile vs 2.8ร—
Cranberry Preserves Jar 3.5ร— per tile vs 2.1ร—
Strawberry Keg Regrows + 3ร— wine
Hot Pepper Keg Regrows daily + 3ร— wine
Corn Preserves Jar Seasonal + 2.62ร— pickles
Hops Keg only Pale Ale (300g)
Wheat Keg only Beer (200g)

๐Ÿบ Pale Ale vs Wine

Pale Ale deserves special attention because of its fast processing time.

Aspect Pale Ale Ancient Fruit Wine Starfruit Wine
Processing Time 1.78 days 6.25 days 6.25 days
Base Price 300g 1,650g 3,150g
Artisan Price 420g 2,310g 4,410g
Gold per Keg/Day 236g 370g 706g
Regrowth Daily Every 7 days No regrowth
Seeds 50g (Pierre) Free (Seed Maker) 400g (Oasis)

Pale Ale is the best early-to-mid game artisan good. Hops grow on a trellis, produce daily after 11 days, and Pale Ale takes only 1.78 days to process. With just 30 Hops plants and 15 Kegs, you can make 6,300g/day (Artisan). That's over 175,000g per season from a 30-tile trellis section.

When to switch: Once you have Ancient Fruit set up in the Greenhouse and Ginger Island, Ancient Fruit Wine becomes more profitable per Keg and less daily work. Pale Ale is better for Year 1โ€“2; Ancient Fruit Wine dominates Year 3+.

๐Ÿฏ Mead / Juice / Coffee / Green Tea

Mead

Property Value
Input Honey (from Bee House)
Time ~2.5 days
Base Price 200g
Artisan Price 280g
Best Honey Fairy Rose Honey (680g base, 952g as mead with Artisan)

Juice

Property Value
Input Any vegetable
Multiplier 2.25ร— (different from wine's 3ร—)
Best Vegetables Pumpkin (Juice = 720 Artisan), Red Cabbage (585 Artisan)

Coffee

Property Value
Input 5 Coffee Beans
Time ~0.75 days (very fast)
Base Price 150g
Best Use Speed buff (+1 speed for 1 min) โ€” don't sell it, drink it
Keg for Coffee Yes, but coffee is better as a buff item than a money-maker

Green Tea

Property Value
Input Tea Leaves
Time 3 hours
Base Price 100g
Best Use Gift (loved by Caroline and some others), also speed buff

Tip: Coffee is the best daily consumable in the game. Drink coffee for +1 speed, then stack it with Pepper Poppers (+1 speed) and a Horse Flute for maximum map coverage. Never sell coffee โ€” it's worth more as speed boost than as gold.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Optimal Keg Layout Strategy

Keg Count Targets

Phase Kegs Crop Support Daily Income (Artisan)
Early (Y1 Summer) 5โ€“10 20 Blueberries + 10 Hops 5,000g/day
Mid (Y1 Fall) 20โ€“30 30 Hops + Greenhouse Ancient Fruit 15,000g/day
Late (Y2 Spring) 60โ€“80 Full Greenhouse (120 tiles) + Island start 40,000g/day
Endgame (Y2+) 200+ Island + Greenhouse + Starfruit rotation 100,000g+/day

Best Layout Pattern

A Big Shed fits 67 Kegs (optimal layout):

Floor: Wood floor or crystal path
Rows: 6 columns of kegs, 1-wide paths between
Pattern: K K K K K K (path) K K K K K K
         67 Kegs per Big Shed

For Ginger Island:

Build 2 Big Sheds = 134 Kegs
One shed for Ancient Fruit Wine
One shed for Starfruit Wine (or overflow)
Place near island farm for easy access

Keg Material Requirements

Keg Count Wood Copper Bar Iron Bar Oak Resin
10 300 10 10 10
50 1,500 50 50 50
100 3,000 100 100 100
200 6,000 200 200 200

Oak Resin is the bottleneck. Start tapping every Oak tree on your farm in Year 1 Spring. Plant an Oak forest (20+ trees) on the train tracks or desert for infinite Resin.

Tip: In 1.6, you can craft Tree Fertilizer (from Foraging Mastery) to speed up Oak tree growth. Apply it to planted acorns and you'll have tappable trees in 5 days instead of 20+.

๐Ÿ† Artisan Profession Details

Profession Path Lv 5 Lv 10 Best For
Farming โ†’ Artisan Tiller (+10% crop value) Artisan (+40% artisan goods) Everything (best)
Farming โ†’ Agriculturist Tiller (+10% crop value) Agriculturist (+10% growth speed) Min-max speedruns

Artisan is the undisputed best Lv 10 Farming profession for profit. The +40% applies to:

  • Wine, Juice, Pale Ale, Beer, Mead, Coffee, Green Tea
  • Cheese, Goat Cheese
  • Mayonnaise, Duck Mayonnaise, Dinosaur Mayonnaise
  • Cloth
  • Honey
  • Jelly, Pickles, Dried Fruit (1.6 dehydrator)
  • Smoked Fish (1.6 smoker)
  • Truffle Oil

1.6 Dehydrator Bonus

The 1.6 Dehydrator turns fruit into dried fruit that sells for 1.5ร— base. With Artisan:

Fruit Base Dried Artisan Dried
Ancient Fruit 550g 825g 1,155g
Starfruit 750g 1,125g 1,575g
Melon 250g 375g 525g

Dried fruit has one major advantage: it doesn't spoil or require cask aging. However, it's still less profitable per fruit than wine, and the 1-day processing time means it competes with Preserves Jar for your fruit supply.

Tip: The Dehydrator is niche. Use it for excess fruit when all your Kegs are full, or for low-value fruit (blueberries, cranberries) where the fast processing time benefits you. Never put Starfruit or Ancient Fruit in a Dehydrator โ€” wine is always better.

๐Ÿ’ก Artisan Tips & Tricks

  1. Always choose Artisan profession โ€” The +40% bonus is game-changing. Only Agriculturist wins in speedrun scenarios.
  2. Oak Resin is king โ€” Start tapping Oak trees on Day 1 of Spring Year 1. Plant an oak forest on your farm or train tracks.
  3. Greenhouse Ancient Fruit first โ€” Fill the Greenhouse with Ancient Fruit before anything else. One seed becomes infinite through Seed Makers.
  4. Pale Ale for early cash โ€” Hops produce daily and Pale Ale processes in under 2 days. It's the best early-game money maker.
  5. Casks are for Starfruit only โ€” With 189 cask slots in the cellar, fill once with Starfruit Wine, wait 56 days, collect 4,410g ร— 189 = 833,490g.
  6. Preserves Jar for multiple-harvest crops โ€” Blueberries and Cranberries get better per-tile value in Jars than Kegs.
  7. Ginger Island is your second Keg shed โ€” Build 2 Big Sheds on the island farm, fill with Kegs. Process fruit on-site.
  8. 1.6 Dehydrator for overflow โ€” When your Kegs are full and you have excess fruit, Dehydrators process in 1 day and free up space.
  9. Smoker (+1.3ร— fish) is new in 1.6 โ€” Smoked fish sells well, uses the same Keg shed area, and doesn't compete with fruit processing.
