๐Ÿพ Palia Animals & Pets Guide

Palia's world is full of wildlife. From the graceful sernuk grazing in Kilima Valley to the skittish chapaa darting through Bahari Bay, the creatures of Palia are more than just scenery โ€” they're a source of food, crafting materials, and gold. This guide covers every animal you'll encounter, how hunting works, and what companion pets can do for you.

Note: Unlike some farming games, Palia doesn't have domesticatable barn animals you can buy and raise. Animal husbandry here is about hunting wildlife for materials and collecting companion pets for cosmetic and gameplay benefits.

๐ŸฆŒ Wildlife Overview

Palia's creatures fall into a few broad categories. Each behaves differently, drops unique materials, and requires different tools to interact with.

Category Examples Tool Required Primary Drops
๐ŸฆŒ Hoofed Sernuk, Elder Sernuk Hunting Bow Meat, Hide, Antler
๐Ÿฐ Small Mammals Chapaa, Muujin, Proudhorn Hunting Bow / Sneak Meat, Fur, Tail
๐Ÿ› Bugs Paper Lantern Bug, Scrap Bug, Garden Ladybug Bug Net Chitin, Silk, Parts
๐Ÿฆ Birds Phoenixfire, Azurite Hopper Bug Net Feathers, Carapace
๐ŸŸ Aquatic All fish species Fishing Rod Fish, Roe

Sernuk

The most common large herbivore in Palia. Sernuks graze in open fields across both Kilima Valley and Bahari Bay. They're alert and will flee if they sense you approaching. An arrow to the body will bring one down, but a headshot yields star-quality materials that sell for more.

  • Locations: Kilima Valley meadows, Bahari Bay grasslands
  • Drops: Raw Meat, Sernuk Hide, Sernuk Antler
  • Star Quality: Headshot kills produce star-quality drops (+50% sell price)
  • Best Time: Any time of day

Tip: Sneak upwind of sernuk by crouching (Left Ctrl on PC) and approach from behind. Getting within 15 meters before drawing your bow guarantees a clean headshot.

Chapaa

These fluffy, squirrel-like creatures are fast and small, making them tricky targets. Chapaas are most active during the day and can be found in wooded areas. They're also the stars of the Chapaa Chase event during Majii Market.

  • Locations: Kilima Valley forests, Bahari Bay brush
  • Drops: Raw Meat, Chapaa Fur, Chapaa Tail
  • Star Quality: Headshot bonus applies
  • Behavior: Runs in zigzag patterns when spooked

Muujin

The Muujin is a deer-like creature with a distinctive cry. They're slightly larger than sernuk and drop higher-quality materials. The Proudhorn is a rare Muujin variant with impressive antlers that only spawns in specific conditions.

  • Locations: Bahari Bay (ruins areas)
  • Drops: Raw Meat, Muujin Hide, Muujin Antler
  • Rare Variant: Proudhorn โ€” drops Proudhorn Antler (used in high-end recipes)

Elder Sernuk

A larger, paler variant of the standard sernuk. Elder Sernuks are slower but much tougher, requiring multiple arrows to bring down. They spawn less frequently but drop better materials.

  • Locations: Bahari Bay (rare spawn)
  • Drops: Raw Meat, Elder Sernuk Hide, Sernuk Antler
  • HP: Roughly 3ร— that of a normal sernuk
  • Reward: Elder Sernuk Hide sells for 3ร— the price of regular hide

๐Ÿน Hunting Mechanics

Tools & Upgrades

Tool Skill Required Damage Range Notes
Makeshift Bow Hunting Lv. 1 Low Short Starting bow
Standard Bow Hunting Lv. 3 Medium Medium First upgrade
Fine Bow Hunting Lv. 7 High Long Good damage, good range
Exquisite Bow Hunting Lv. 10 Very High Very Long Best in slot
Dispel Bow Quest Unlock High + Special Long Dispel magic effects

Hunting Tips

  1. Always aim for the head. A headshot is an instant kill on most standard creatures and guarantees star-quality drops. Practice your aim on stationary targets in Kilima before hitting the field.

  2. Use slowdown arrows. Crafted using Sapwood and Stone, these arrows reduce the target's movement speed, making follow-up shots easier. Essential for Muujin and Elder Sernuk.

  3. Hunt at dawn and dusk. Creatures are most active during the transition hours (05:00-07:00 and 18:00-20:00). You'll find more spawns and larger groups.

  4. Don't sell raw meat too fast. You'll need bulk meat for cooking recipes, especially for high-value dishes like Sernuk Stew and Muujin Bahari. Only sell excess once you've stockpiled 50+ units.

  5. The Exquisite Bow is worth the grind. The damage jump from Fine to Exquisite is dramatic. You'll one-shot standard sernuk from much farther away, making your hunting trips twice as efficient.

๐Ÿ• Companion Pets

Companion pets in Palia are cosmetic follow-alongs that trot beside you as you explore. Most are obtained through the Premium Store, though some are event rewards or Twitch drop bonuses.

How to Get a Pet

  • Premium Store: The primary source. Pets cost anywhere from 100-800 Palia Coins depending on rarity and animation complexity.
  • Majii Market: Limited-time pet rewards during event rotations.
  • Twitch Drops: Occasionally offered during live events and game anniversaries.
  • Referral Program: Some pets were available during the game's referral bonus events.

Available Pets

Pet Name Type Source Special Animation
๐ŸฆŠ Fennec Fox Fox-like companion Premium Store Digs, jumps on rocks
๐Ÿฑ Striped Cat Cat companion Premium Store Chases butterflies
๐Ÿถ Fluffy Dog Dog companion Early Access Bundle Fetches sticks
๐Ÿฆœ Palcat Cat-bird hybrid Majii Market exclusive Glides short distances
๐Ÿฐ Glowbunny Glowing rabbit Seasonal event reward Leaves light trail
๐Ÿฆ‰ Scrafox Fox with scarf Twitch Drop Poses for screenshots

Tip: Pets are purely cosmetic โ€” they don't help with gathering, combat, or farming. Buy the one whose animations you like most. The Fennec Fox has the most interactive animations of the standard store pets.

Pet Care

Pets in Palia require zero maintenance. No feeding, no cleaning, no petting required. Once you've acquired a companion pet, you can:

  • Toggle visibility from your inventory or housing menu
  • Switch between owned pets freely โ€” they're account-bound
  • Name your pet โ€” each pet can be given a custom name
  • Pet interaction โ€” press the interact key near your pet to trigger its special animation

Note: There are no pet-affection mechanics, no breeding, and no pet-based resource generation in Palia. If you're coming from Stardew Valley or Coral Island, treat Palia's pets as stylish flair rather than productive farmhands.

๐Ÿ  Housing Plot Wildlife

Your housing plot attracts wild creatures based on what you've built and planted. While you can't pen or domesticate them, having wildlife visit your plot adds life and atmosphere.

Attraction What Shows Up How to Attract
Flower Garden Butterflies, Garden Ladybugs Plant 5+ flower crops
Pond/Fountain Kilima Frog, Water Strider Bugs Build a water feature
Fruit Trees Birds, Muujin (rare) Plant 3+ fruit trees
Compost Bin Scrap Bugs, Dung Beetles Build compost bins
Tall Grass Chapaas (occasional) Leave grass unmowed

Wildlife Photography

Palia has a photography feature (Camera item) that lets you take pictures of wildlife. This is required for certain quests and is a fun side activity. Some creatures are trophy-photo targets for the "Palia Photographer" achievement.

Tips for wildlife photography: - Crouch before approaching โ€” sudden movements scare subjects away - Use the zoom function to frame shots from a distance - The golden hour (in-game dawn/dusk) gives the best lighting for photos - Target star-quality creatures for the best photo scores

๐Ÿ“Š Material Value Reference

Knowing what each animal drop is worth helps you decide what to sell vs. save for crafting.

Material Source Base Sell Price Used In
Raw Meat Sernuk, Chapaa, Muujin 15 Cooking (many recipes)
Sernuk Hide Sernuk 25 Furniture, Armor
Sernuk Antler Sernuk (headshot) 60 Decorative furniture
Chapaa Fur Chapaa 30 Soft furniture, Rugs
Chapaa Tail Chapaa (rare drop) 80 Exotic furniture
Muujin Hide Muujin 40 Durable furniture
Muujin Antler Muujin (headshot) 90 Wall mounts, Decor
Elder Sernuk Hide Elder Sernuk 75 High-end furniture
Proudhorn Antler Proudhorn (rare) 200 Special recipes, Quests

Quick tip: Hide all your regular leather and meat. Crafting furniture for your housing plot almost always beats selling raw materials. The furniture you build can then raise your plot's Appeal score, which unlocks more housing upgrades.
