How Fishing Works in Palia

Fishing in Palia is a core skill that rewards you with food ingredients, quest items, and valuable resources. Each body of water has its own unique fish pool. Your success depends on three main factors:

  • Location: Rivers, lakes, ponds, and coastal waters each host different species.
  • Bait: Standard worms work for most fish, but glow worms and special bait are required for rare and epic catches.
  • Time of Day: Some fish only appear during the day (6:00โ€“18:00), others at night (18:00โ€“6:00), and a few are active 24/7.

You can also use fishing hooks and buffs from food to increase your catch rate, but the tables below assume no modifiers.

Bait Guide

Knowing which bait to use saves you time and resources.

  • Worm Bait: Standard bait. Catches all common and uncommon fish. Can be dug from the ground or purchased from the General Store for 10 Gold each.
  • Glow Worm Bait: Required for all rare and epic fish. Crafted using 1 Worm Bait + 1 Brightshroom. Brightshrooms are found in caves and near water at night.
  • Special Bait: Some limited-time events introduce unique bait, but glow worms are your primary tool for high-tier fishing.

Pro Tip: Always carry at least 50 glow worms when heading to Bahari Bay or the Underground. Rare fish appear more frequently in these zones, and you donโ€™t want to waste a trip.

Fishing Skill Progression

Your fishing level increases as you catch fish. Higher levels unlock new recipes, better rods, and the ability to catch rarer fish without as much struggle.

Level Unlock
1 Basic Rod, Worm Bait
3 Standard Rod (longer cast)
5 Glow Worm Bait recipe
7 Fine Rod (better reel speed)
10 Exquisite Rod (best stats)
15 Fishing Hook upgrades available

Quick Tips

  1. Always fish at night for epics. Every epic fish in Palia (except Crystal Carp) is only available between 18:00 and 6:00. Plan your fishing trips accordingly.
  2. Use glow worms for bundles. If youโ€™re working on bundles, skip worm bait entirely. Glow worms are the only way to catch the rare and epic fish required.
  3. Fish in the Underground for variety. The Underground Lake is the only place to catch Glowing Koi and Crystal Carp, both needed for bundles. Itโ€™s also a great spot for leveling up.
  4. Donโ€™t sell rare fish. Before selling any fish, check if itโ€™s needed for a bundle. Youโ€™ll save yourself hours of frustration later.
  5. Eat fishing buff food. Dishes like Fishermanโ€™s Brew (+2 Fishing) and Spicy Fish Stew (+3 Fishing) increase your catch rate and reduce the time fish take to bite. Always cook these before a serious fishing session.
  6. Upgrade your rod first. Spend your early gold on the Standard Rod, then the Fine Rod. The longer cast and faster reel speed make a huge difference when chasing rare fish.

Happy fishing, and may your line always be tight! For more Palia guides, check out our crop database and crafting recipes.
